Junior Friends of Rietvlei
Little explorers. Big adventures. A lifelong love for nature.
Our Mission for the Next Generation
Inspiring the next generation of nature lovers!
The Junior Friends of Rietvlei gives children and young people the opportunity to discover, explore and learn about the wonderful natural world at Rietvlei Nature Reserve. Through fun activities, educational experiences, guided outings and conservation projects, we aim to encourage a love and respect for wildlife and the environment from an early age.
Whether they are fascinated by birds, animals, insects, plants or simply enjoy being outdoors, Junior Friends can learn more about the incredible biodiversity of Rietvlei while developing a greater understanding of conservation and the important role each of us can play in protecting our natural heritage.

- Did you Know...
Ostriches: These fluffy little birds may look small and delicate, but they grow into the largest birds on Earth!
Fast growers: Ostrich chicks can grow around 25–30 cm per month during their early development.
Born ready to explore: Within days of hatching, chicks can walk, run and follow their parents.
Amazing camouflage: Their spiky, brown-and-cream feathers help them blend into dry grass and sandy surroundings.
Protective parents: Both male and female ostriches help care for their young, with males often taking the lead in protecting the chicks.
Future speedsters: As adults, ostriches can run at speeds of around 70 km/h, making them the fastest birds on land.
Tiny beginnings, giant eggs: Ostrich eggs are the largest of any living bird and can weigh around 1.4 kg!
Fun fact: Ostrich chicks are born with their eyes open and are covered in soft, bristly down rather than typical fluffy feathers.
These fascinating birds are a wonderful reminder of how incredible nature is, even at its smallest stages!
