At Rietvlei Nature Reserve, the Honorary Rangers are dedicated volunteers who work alongside reserve management to support conservation, security, and visitor experiences.

Through their commitment and thousands of volunteer hours each year, they make a meaningful contribution to protecting one of Tshwane's most treasured natural areas.

What Our Honorary Rangers Do

Our trained volunteers assist reserve management in a wide range of activities, including:
• Conducting anti-poaching and anti-crime patrols.
• Supporting reserve security during high-risk periods.
• Monitoring wildlife populations and participating in game counts.
• Assisting with environmental law enforcement where appropriate.
• Reporting suspicious activities, infrastructure damage, and other concerns.
• Supporting veld fire prevention initiatives and emergency response efforts.
• Inspecting boundary fences and reporting maintenance requirements.
• Assisting with visitor management during peak periods and special events.
• Serving as ambassadors for conservation by promoting responsible use and appreciation of Rietvlei Nature Reserve.

Working under the direction of reserve management, the Honorary Rangers complement the efforts of the reserve's permanent staff, helping to protect wildlife, preserve the natural environment, and enhance the experience of visitors.
